India Launches Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card
Key Point
- India launched the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card, introducing a fully digital OCI process that eliminates certain booklet reissuance requirements.
Electronic Overseas Citizen Card
India’s Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced the e-OCI Card as a citizen-focused initiative to transform Overseas Citizen of India services through a fully digital platform. The new system is designed to simplify OCI procedures and improve accessibility for OCI cardholders worldwide.
What Is Changing?
Under the new e-OCI system, applicants can complete the entire process electronically, including:
- Submitting OCI applications online;
- Uploading supporting documentation electronically; and
- Downloading the approved e-OCI Card after issuance.
The government has stated that the digital platform is intended to make OCI services more efficient while reducing reliance on physical documentation.
Reduced Administrative Requirements
The launch introduces several changes aimed at reducing administrative burdens for OCI cardholders.
Under the new framework:
- Cardholders will no longer need to obtain a new OCI booklet if the original is lost or damaged.
- Cardholders will no longer need to obtain a new OCI booklet when they receive a new passport after reaching 20 years of age.
Additionally, each OCI cardholder will receive a unique registration number under the new system.
