Finland International Protection Permit Changes

• Finland introduced new rules for asylum and refugee permit holders on 2 January 2025  

Finland announced new rules for international protection permits. 

Starting 2 January 2025, Finland will grant asylum and extended refugee status permits for three years instead of four. Subsidiary protection permits will be issued for one year initially and extended for two years instead of four. 

Temporary protection will promote controlled migration by more frequently assessing the need for international protection and granting protection only as long as necessary. 

New grounds for refusal and termination of protection include serious crime convictions or threats to society. If protection is lost but removal from the country is not possible, a temporary residence permit for one year will be issued.
