Portugal Launches Online Renewals for Permanent Residence Documents for EU Nationals and Family Members

• Portugal expanded its Renewals Portal to allow online applications for permanent residence certificates and cards for eligible EU nationals and their family members. 

Online Permanent Residence Document Renewals  

Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) announced that, effective July 1, 2026, eligible applicants can submit requests for permanent residence certificates and cards through the Renewals Portal. 

Who Can Use the Portal? 

The portal now supports applications for: 

• Permanent residence certificates for EU nationals (Article 16); and 
• Permanent residence cards for third-country national family members of EU nationals (Article 17).  

Applicants can complete the process online, including: 

• Submission of the application; 
• Uploading supporting documentation; and 
• Payment of applicable government fees.  

Changes to the Application Process 

The Renewals Portal will now serve as the primary channel for submitting and processing these requests, replacing similar procedures previously available through AIMA’s Contact Form. Applications submitted through the Contact Form by June 30, 2026 will continue to be processed, although applicants may choose to resubmit through the new portal functionality.  

Biometric Collection Requirements

If AIMA determines that biometric data collection is required after reviewing an application, the agency will schedule an in-person appointment and notify the applicant of the date, time and location. In these cases, the in-person visit will be limited to biometric collection, while the remainder of the application process will continue digitally.  

Current Portal Availability

According to AIMA, the Renewals Portal currently supports: 

• Residence permits that have expired or will expire between July 1, 2025 and October 31, 2026; 
• Golden Visa (ARI) residence permits that expired between February 22, 2020 and October 31, 2026; and 
• Permanent residence certificates and cards for eligible EU nationals and family members.
