European Union: Lifting of Border Controls for Bulgaria and Romania

  • Bulgaria and Romania will be fully confirmed into the Schengen Area by EU on 1 January 2025  

Overview  

Bulgaria and Romania will be fully confirmed into the Schengen Area by the European Union (EU) on 1 January 2025. As a result, border and land checks for land-based entry will be lifted for Bulgarian and Romanian citizens. Schengen Area countries will have the option to introduce temporary border controls for specific purposes. Air and sea border controls were previously lifted on 31 March 2024.
