European Union Lifts Restrictive Visa Measures on Ethiopia

Key Point

  • The Council of the European Union has lifted restrictive visa measures previously applied to Ethiopia, citing improved cooperation on migration and readmission.

EU Removes Visa Restrictions Previously Applied to Ethiopia

The Council of the European Union has announced that it is lifting restrictive visa measures against Ethiopia, following improved cooperation from the Ethiopian government on migration management and readmission.

The decision reverses measures that had limited Ethiopian nationals’ ability to obtain certain EU visas.

Background

The EU had previously applied restrictive measures under the EU Visa Code, which allows the Council to adopt visarelated restrictions when a third country does not cooperate sufficiently on the readmission of its nationals.

The Council states that Ethiopia has now demonstrated substantial progress, enabling the EU to remove these restrictions.
