Taiwan Imposes Temporary Entry Restrictions on Travelers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda

Key Point

  • Taiwan suspended visa issuance and deny entry to most travelers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda for 90 days on June 2, 2026, due to Ebola outbreaks.

90Day Entry Restrictions for Travelers From Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) and Uganda

Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced new temporary entry restrictions and visa control measures for residents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

The measures take effect June 2, 2026, and will remain in place for 90 days, in alignment with Taiwan’s national antipandemic policy and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control.

The announcement states that authorities are implementing the restrictions because both countries are experiencing severe Ebola outbreaks.

Key Measures

  • Visa issuance suspended for residents of the DRC and Uganda.
  • Individuals from these countries who already hold valid visas will be denied entry.
  • Previously issued visas (within the last three months) for affected travelers who have not yet entered Taiwan will be invalidated under Article 12 of the Statute Governing the Issuance of ROC Visas in Foreign Passports.

Exemptions

The restrictions do not apply to:

  • Admitted degree students
  • Individuals on diplomatic or official business
  • Spouses and minor children of ROC (Taiwan) nationals
  • Travelers entering for emergency or humanitarian reasons, such as funerals or visiting critically ill family members
