Poland Deadline for PESEL UKR Holders to Confirm Passport Information

• Poland reminds Ukrainian nationals who obtained a PESEL UKR status based solely on a declaration of identity to present a valid passport at a municipal office in Poland by August 31, 2026 or risk losing status and temporary protection beginning September 1, 2026. 

PESEL UKR Status Requirements 

Polish authorities announced an important compliance requirement for certain holders of PESEL UKR status. Individuals who originally obtained PESEL UKR solely on the basis of a declaration of identity, without presenting a valid passport or other travel document, must verify their identity by presenting a valid passport at a municipal office (Urząd Miasta or Urząd Gminy) no later than August  31, 2026. 

Failure to complete this process by the deadline will result in the loss of UKR status and the associated temporary protection benefits in Poland, effective September 1, 2026. 

Impacted Individuals

This requirement applies to Ukrainian nationals who: 

• Obtained PESEL UKR status without presenting a valid passport or travel document; and 
• Had their identity recorded based solely on a declaration of identity. 

Affected individuals should visit any municipal office in Poland and present a valid passport to confirm their identity before the deadline. 

Who Is Exempt from the New Requirement?

This requirement does not apply to individuals who: 

• Presented a valid passport when obtaining PESEL UKR status; and 
• Had their passport details properly recorded in the PESEL system. 

These individuals are not required to take additional action unless their passport information has changed. 

Submit Updated Passport Information Following Passport Renewal

Individuals who have received a new passport since obtaining PESEL UKR status should ensure that their updated passport details are registered with the appropriate municipal office. 

Keeping passport records up to date can help avoid issues related to status verification and access to temporary protection benefits.
