Poland Advances Draft Law to Phase Out Special Protections for Ukrainian Citizens

Key Point

  • Poland has introduced a draft law that would formally end the temporary protections and benefits granted to Ukrainian citizens under the Special Act adopted in 2022.

Poland on Temporary Protections for Ukrainian Nationals

Poland announced that the Council of Ministers has approved a draft law that would phase out the temporary protections created under the Special Act on Assistance to Ukrainian Citizens. The act governs the stay and work authorization and access to services for Ukrainians who fled the conflict beginning in 2022.

Looking Ahead

The draft has now been submitted to Parliament for legislative consideration.

According to the government, the proposal would repeal the extraordinary measures introduced during the initial emergency period and transition Ukrainian nationals to the standard legal framework that applies to other foreign nationals in Poland.

This includes changes to residence procedures, access to benefits and the conditions under which individuals may remain and work in the country.
