New Zealand Launches Hybrid Parent Resident Visa Selection System
- New Zealand introduced a hybrid selection process for Parent Resident Visa applications, with most expressions of interest selected from a queue and a smaller portion selected by ballot.
Hybrid Parent Resident Visa Selection System
Immigration New Zealand announced that, effective Oct. 5, 2026, all valid Parent Resident Visa Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be placed in a single pool under a new hybrid selection model.
The change modifies how EOIs are selected for further processing while maintaining the existing annual approval cap for the Parent Resident Visa category.
New Hybrid Selection Model
Under the new system:
- Approximately 90% of EOIs will be selected in date order through a queue-based process.
- Approximately 10% of EOIs will be selected through a random ballot.
- All valid EOIs are now held within a single selection pool.
Annual Visa Allocation Unchanged
The annual limit of 2,500 approvals in principle for the Parent Resident Visa category remains unchanged despite the introduction of the new selection process.
No Action Required for Existing Applicants
Individuals who held a valid Parent Resident Visa EOI on Oct. 5, 2026, do not need to submit a new application or take any immediate action.
Transition Arrangements
Immigration New Zealand stated that queue positions for existing EOIs are still being finalized. Eligible applicants will be contacted directly once queue placement information becomes available.
The agency has asked applicants not to contact immigration authorities to request queue positions while transitional arrangements are being completed.
Upcoming Selection Round
The first Parent Resident Visa selection round under the hybrid model is scheduled for Nov. 10, 2026.
What Families Should Know
The new process is intended to provide a combination of predictability and opportunity by prioritizing most EOIs according to submission date while reserving a portion of selections for a random ballot. Individuals with existing valid EOIs will automatically transition into the new framework without needing to reapply.
