New Zealand introduces New Work Visa Pathways Under India Trade Agreement
- New Zealand’s new Free Trade Agreement with India introduces two work visa categories, expanded post-study work rights for Indian graduates and a future working holiday program for Indian nationals.
New Zealand and India Free Trade Agreement Takes Effect
The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force on Oct. 20, 2026, bringing several immigration changes aimed at supporting New Zealand’s workforce and economic needs.
The agreement includes new work visa pathways, expanded opportunities for Indian graduates and commitments related to international student work rights.
New Work Visa Categories for Indian Nationals
As part of the FTA, Immigration New Zealand has introduced two new Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visa categories effective Oct. 20, 2026. These pathways are intended for:
- Highly skilled professionals
- Select occupations considered culturally significant or iconic to India
Key features include:
- Up to 5,000 TEE visa holders allowed in New Zealand at any given time
- Most positions allocated to occupations already included on New Zealand’s Green List
- Visa validity of up to three years
- No direct pathway to permanent residence through these visa categories
Applicants must continue to meet all standard immigration requirements, including holding a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer, satisfying qualification and English language requirements and meeting health and character criteria.
Expanded Post-Study Work Rights for Indian PhD Graduates
Beginning Nov. 16, 2026, Indian nationals who complete a New Zealand PhD will be eligible for a post-study work visa valid for up to four years, an increase from the current three-year duration.
Student Work Rights Commitments
The agreement also includes commitments related to student employment.
Currently, eligible international students may work up to 25 hours per week while studying in New Zealand. Should future policy changes occur, the FTA guarantees that Indian students will retain the ability to work at least 20 hours per week during their studies.
New Working Holiday Visa Program
The FTA also establishes a new working holiday scheme for Indian nationals.
Key details include:
- Available to Indian citizens aged 18 to 30
- Implementation required within two years of the FTA entering into force
- Annual cap of 1,000 participants
- Permits stays of up to 12 months in New Zealand
