Ireland Removes Right of Appeal for Certain Short‑Stay Visa Refusals

Key Point

  • Ireland has removed the right of appeal for most short‑stay (Type C) visa refusals, effective immediately, according to the Department of Justice.

Ireland Announces End of Appeals for Most Short‑Stay Visa Refusals

On May 29, 2026, Ireland announced that applicants who are refused a short‑stay (Type C) visa will no longer have the right to appeal the decision. Under the reform, refusals for short‑stay visas, including those for tourism, business visits, short courses and family visits, are now final.

The Department states that the measure is intended to speed up decision‑making, as applicants will no longer wait for an appeal outcome.

Exceptions: When Appeals Still Apply

The right of appeal remains available for:

  • Long‑stay (Type D) visa refusals, including:
  • Employment visas
  • Long‑term study visas
  • Most family‑based visas (except “visit family” applications)
  • Short‑stay applications by third‑country nationals covered under the EU Free Movement Directive
