European Union: Clarification of EU Long-Term Resident Status

Overview  

The European Council introduced plans to update the EU long-term resident’s directive. This directive sets the conditions for third-country nationals to acquire EU long-term resident status. As a result, third-country nationals can cumulate residence periods of up to two years in other member states to meet the requirements of the five-year residence period. Certain conditions, such as stable resources and sickness insurance, must be met, and integration conditions may apply.  

What are the Changes?  

The European Council clarified the eligibility requirements for third-country nationals applying for long-term resident status. According to the update, these amendments aim to clarify the conditions of long-term resident status across EU member states.
