Norway Extends Suspension of Returns to Iran Through September 2026

Key Point

  • Norway extended the suspension of forced returns to Iran until September 20, 2026, due to ongoing instability in the country.

Norway Continues Suspension of Duty to Return for Iranian Nationals

Norway announced a fivemonth extension of the suspension of the duty to return for Iranian nationals who have received a final rejection of their residence applications. The suspension now remains in effect until September 20, 2026.

Eligible Individuals

According to the government announcement, the extension is due to:

  • Continued uncertainty in Iran, including nationwide protests
  • The conflict between the U.S. and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026
  • Insufficient reliable information to safely assess return conditions.

During the suspension period:

  • The police will not carry out forced returns to Iran.
  • UDI will postpone decisions that could result in return to Iran.
  • UDI may still process cases that are clearly eligible for approval.
  • Iranian nationals with final return decisions are not required to leave Norway while the suspension is in effect.
  • The suspension does not grant additional rights, such as work authorization, unless already held.
  • Individuals with expired residence permits or visas will not be forcibly returned during this period.

Not Covered Under the Extension

Cases processed under the Dublin III Regulation or the first country of asylum principle. These individuals must still return to the responsible European country.
