New Zealand Extends English Language Requirements to AEWV Skill Level 3 Roles

Key Point

  • Beginning June 1, 2026, New Zealand will require Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applicants in ANZSCO/NOL skill level 3 roles to meet minimum English language standards.

AEWV Language Requirements

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) announced that, effective June 1, 2026, the minimum English language requirement currently applied to AEWV applicants in skill levels 4 and 5 will be extended to skill level 3 occupations.

Applicants can meet the requirement through:

  • Citizenship from an Englishspeaking country
  • Prior work or study in English
  • An approved Englishlanguage test

Impact

Beginning June 1, 2026:

  • New AEWV applicants in skill level 3 roles must meet the minimum English standard.
  • The requirement does not apply to Global Workforce Seasonal Visa, Peak Seasonal Visa or Job Change applications.

Transitional Arrangements

IINZ confirms that it will not apply the new requirements retroactively to current AEWV holders. Additional exemptions include:

  • Individuals whose AEWV expires on or before December 1, 2026, when applying for a further AEWV at skill level 3.
  • Applicants who have already provided Englishlanguage evidence in a previous AEWV application.
