Netherlands to Stop Recognizing Russian Non-Biometric Passports for Schengen Travel
- The Netherlands will no longer recognize Russian non-biometric passports from October 1, 2026, limiting Schengen visa/residence permit eligibility and travel for affected Russian nationals.
Netherlands to End Recognition of Russian Non-Biometric Passports for Schengen Travel
The Netherlands has announced that it will no longer recognize Russian non-biometric passports beginning October 1, 2026. As a result, Russian nationals holding non-biometric passports will be unable to use these documents for travel to the Netherlands or the broader Schengen Area after this date, nor can use this for applications for a residence permit.
Schengen Visa Application Impact
Russian nationals seeking a Schengen visa with a non-biometric passport may still apply if their planned travel to and from the Schengen Area will be completed before October 1, 2026.
However, visa processing times cannot be guaranteed, and applications submitted close to the deadline may not be processed in time for travel.
Next Steps
Applicants should be aware that visa processing times cannot be guaranteed. To help avoid potential travel disruptions, Dutch authorities recommend that Russian nationals obtain a biometric passport before applying for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands.
