Ireland Updates Stamp 2 Bridging Permission for English Language Students
Key Point
- Ireland has updated its 2026 rules to allow eligible English‑language students progressing into Higher Education Programmes to apply for a short‑term Stamp 2 bridging permission valid through September 30.
Bridging Permission for English Language Students
Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has issued updated guidance for English language students seeking a short‑term Stamp 2 bridging permission in 2026. The update applies to students progressing from eligible English language programs into Higher Education Programmes beginning by the end of October 2026.
The bridging permission provides a temporary Stamp 2 valid until September 30, 2026, issued from the expiry date of the student’s current Irish Residence Permit (IRP). Applications must be submitted through ISD’s online renewal portal.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the bridging permission, students must:
- Hold an in‑date IRP or one that expired within the past month
- Provide proof of full enrollment and full payment for a Higher Education Programme listed on the Interim List of Eligible Providers (ILEP)
- Have completed either:
- a third ILEP‑listed English language course, or
- a second English language course completed on or after July 1, 2026
- Submit their application through the ISD online portal
Students who completed their second English language course before July 1, 2026, are not eligible for this bridging permission and may instead complete a third course to renew their permission.
