Denmark Certain Third‑Country Nationals Must Replace Their Residence Cards
Key Point
- Denmark announced that some third‑country nationals with permanent residence as family members of EU citizens will need to replace their residence cards due to new security requirements.
Permanent Residence Cards
Denmark confirmed that older residence cards issued to specific third‑country nationals will no longer be valid in 2026, and affected individuals must obtain a new card to maintain their legal status.
Who Is Affected
Residence cards must be replaced if all of the following apply:
- The individual is a third‑country national with permanent residence in Denmark as a family member of an EU citizen.
- The residence card was issued between 1998 and 2011 or between 3 August 2016 and 3 August 2021
The change is tied to updated EU‑wide security standards for residence documents.
