Canada, Québec Reopens Family Sponsorship Intake with New Cap and Structured Application Period (2026–2028)
Key Point
- Québec introduced a new two-year intake period with capped applications and a structured submission calendar for family reunification sponsorships starting July 2, 2026.
Québec’s New Family Reunification Intake Period
Québec announced a new intake period for family reunification (regroupement familial), reopening applications from July 2, 2026, to June 30, 2028, under updated rules designed to manage demand and align with immigration targets.
Application Caps and Intake Limits
The province will accept a maximum of 15,700 applications during this period:
- 13,300 for spouses and partners
- 2,400 for parents and grandparents
The Québec government will stop accepting applications in that category once it reaches the cap and will not accept new ones until the next intake period.
New Intake Process
Applications will follow a structured calendar, with submission timing based on IRCC documentation dates.
This approach aims to:
- Prioritize applicants who have been waiting the longest
- Create a more predictable and orderly intake system
Key Requirements
- Applications must be submitted by mail only
- Applicants must follow the official intake schedule and eligibility criteria
- Late or excess applications may be returned without processing
Exemptions
Certain applications are not subject to caps, including:
- Dependent children
- Adoption cases
- Orphaned minor relatives
- Add-ons to existing applications
