Canada Income Calculation Method for the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa
Key Point
- Canada will change how it calculates income requirements for the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa starting 31 March 2026.
Parents and Grandparent Super Visa Calculation
Canada has introduced new measures that expand the ways hosts can meet the minimum income requirement for the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa.
Beginning 31 March 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will apply a revised approach to assessing family income for Super Visa eligibility.
The update aims to make the program more accessible while maintaining financial support standards for visiting parents and grandparents.
New Calculation Process
Under the new rules, hosts (and co‑signers, if applicable) now have two additional ways to show they meet the required income threshold:
- Use an extended income assessment period — Hosts may meet the income requirement using either of the two tax years before the application date; previously, officials considered only the most recent tax year.
- Include the visitor’s income — If the host and co‑signer already meet the minimum percentage of required income, they may add the visiting parent’s or grandparent’s income to cover any remaining amount
Current Parents and Grandparent Super Visa Applications
All applications already in process on 31 March 2026, as well as new submissions from that date forward, will be assessed under the updated criteria.
Families who were previously eligible will remain eligible, and those wishing to use the new options must provide documentation demonstrating they meet the income requirement for their family size.
