Working in United Kingdom

U.K. Work visas are required for all non-British nationals (other than Irish nationals) to work in the country. The duration of stay, salary and relationship between the sending entity and the U.K. sponsoring entity help determine which type of visa is needed.

For corporate applications, the sponsoring U.K. entity needs to have a Sponsor Licence. It will then be possible for that entity to issue Certificates of Sponsorship for non-U.K. nationals who are either directly employed by the U.K. entity or transferred to the U.K. entity from overseas. The U.K. also has a graduate trainee route for applicants who are part of a graduate training programme for up to 12 months.

Post-Brexit, EU and EEA nationals are now required to apply for U.K. work visas to work in the U.K., just like non-EU/EEA nationals. EU/EEA nationals who were already residents in the U.K. prior to the end of the Brexit transition period were able to apply for settled or pre-settled status. The deadline for these applications was 30 June 2021; however, exceptional applications may be made post-deadline if mitigating circumstances can be demonstrated. EU/EEA nationals who have received pre-settled status may still apply for settled status once they meet eligibility criteria.

Special arrangements exist for additional groups, including British Nationals (Overseas), some Commonwealth citizens and Turkish nationals.

The U.K. also has special visa categories for entrepreneurs, innovators, startups and investors, health and care workers, seasonal workers, religious workers and creative workers. Contact Envoy Global for more information about these categories.
