Thailand Extends Stay and Work Authorization for Certain Migrant Workers Through 2027
- Thailand extended temporary stay and work authorization for eligible migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam through December 11, 2027, to help address labor shortages and support business continuity.
Extends Stay and Work Authorization
Thailand’s Cabinet approved an extension of stay and work authorization for certain migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam. The government approved the measure on July 14, 2026, to support economic stability and address workforce shortages across key industries.
Eligible migrant workers currently registered in Thailand’s government system may continue to live and work in the country until December 11, 2027.
The extension applies only to workers already registered under existing programs and does not open new registration opportunities.
Reasoning for the Extension
According to the government, many migrant worker permits were scheduled to expire at the end of 2026. Without an extension, employers could face labor disruptions in sectors that rely heavily on foreign workers, including:
- Manufacturing
- Construction
- Services
- Agriculture
The government stated that the measure will help employers maintain workforce continuity and reduce the risk of operational disruptions or temporary business closures.
Additional Measures
During the extension period, Thai authorities plan to:
- Enhance migrant worker databases
- Improve integration of government information systems
- Strengthen oversight and documentation processes
- Reduce irregular immigration and unauthorized employment
- Support compliance with international labor standards
The Ministry of Labor is expected to provide additional details on implementation procedures and required documentation.
