Switzerland Extension of Temporary Protection Status S for Ukrainians

Key Point

  • Switzerland is considering extending Temporary Protection Status S beyond March 2027 while evaluating potential eligibility restrictions and broader adjustments to the asylum system.

Temporary Protection Status S for Ukrainians

On June 19, 2026, the Swiss Federal Council announced the launch of a consultation on the future of Temporary Protection Status S, which was introduced for individuals displaced by the conflict in Ukraine.

The government will make a final decision later in the summer of 2026 after consulting stakeholders.

Potential Extension of Protection Status

Swiss authorities indicated that, due to the continued instability in Ukraine and lack of a foreseeable ceasefire, maintaining Status S beyond March 2027 remains under consideration to ensure continued protection and reduce pressure on the asylum system.

Possible Eligibility Restrictions

As part of the review, the Federal Council is evaluating whether to exclude conscription-age Ukrainian men from eligibility for Status S, in line with discussions currently underway at the EU level.
