Mexico Updates Guidance on Work Visas and Temporary Resident Visas
Key Point
- Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has updated consular guidance for both work visas requiring INM authorization and Temporary Resident Visas, clarifying requirements, processing expectations and post‑arrival obligations.
Mexico Clarifies Work Visa Requirements for Foreign Nationals Engaging in Remunerated Activities
On April 16, 206 and April 22, 2026, Mexico updated guidance for two key visa categories used by foreign nationals entering Mexico for employment or long‑term stays.
The updates clarify the required documentation, processing expectations and post‑arrival steps, in line with the procedures of the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE) and the National Migration Institute (INM).
Visa with Permission to Conduct Remunerated Activities (Work Visa)
Foreign nationals performing paid work in Mexico must obtain INM authorization before a consulate can issue a visa.
Key Requirements:
- INM pre‑authorization submitted by the Mexican employer
- In‑person consular appointment (often booked two months out)
- Valid passport and proof of legal status
- Completed visa application and photograph
- Payment of visa fees
Applicants staying longer than 180 days must apply for a Temporary Resident Card within 30 days of arrival.
Temporary Resident Visa (Stays Over 180 Days)
This visa is for individuals remaining in Mexico for more than 180 days for purposes such as family unity, study, retirement, non‑remunerated activities or certain employer‑sponsored categories.
Not all sub‑categories require INM pre‑authorization; requirements vary.
General Requirements:
- Completed visa application
- Valid passport
- Proof of legal stay (if applying outside the country of nationality)
- Supporting documents based on the purpose of stay
- Consular interview and fee payment
Upon arrival, applicants must obtain a Temporary Resident Card from INM to formalize their stay.
