Media Alert: USCIS Implements New Fingerprint‑Based Security Checks

Key Point

  • Multiple media sources have reported that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service has begun re-running fingerprinting-based background checks on pending applications as part of a new security review process that took effect on April 27, 2026.

Security Vetting Leads to Processing Delays at USCIS

Multiple media outlets, including Reuters and CBS News, report that U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) introduced an updated security vetting process that requires the agency to resubmit fingerprints for background checks on a wide range of pending applications.

According to these outlets, the change took effect on April 27, 2026, and has led to slower adjudication across multiple case types.

USCIS has acknowledged that new security checks are in place and indicated that processing continues, with delays expected to be temporary.

ReSubmission of Fingerprints for Pending Cases

Media reports indicate that USCIS is rerunning fingerprintbased background checks for most applications that completed FBI checks before April 27, 2026. Affected case types include:

  • Adjustment of status
  • Naturalization
  • Familybased petitions
  • Asylum applications

USCIS is using fingerprints already on file, and no new biometrics appointments are being scheduled.

Sequence of Processing

According to these reports, USCIS is reviewing pending cases first under the updated vetting process. Newly filed applications will be submitted for background checks after the pendingcase backlog completes the new review.
