Non-EEA Family Reunification Policy

Ireland introduced updated requirements for non-EEA family reunification, including higher income thresholds and new eligibility conditions.

Ireland has implemented amendments to its Non-EEA Family Reunification Policy, impacting both employment-based sponsors and individuals granted international protection. The changes took effect on June 12, 2026.

Updated Requirements for Employment-Based Sponsors

Key changes include:

  • General Employment Permit holders and other sponsors must provide documentation demonstrating their ability to accommodate family members
  • Sponsors residing in certain supported accommodations are now ineligible
  • Income thresholds for Irish citizens sponsoring spouses and children have increased to €75,000 over three years (up from €40,000)

Changes for International Protection Beneficiaries

New restrictions apply to individuals granted international protection:

  • A two-year waiting period now applies before eligibility to apply for family reunification
  • Sponsors must demonstrate sufficient financial resources and financial independence from state supports
  • Additional conditions include no outstanding state debts and limited access to certain housing or welfare supports

Policy Scope Changes

Refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection will no longer be eligible under the general Family Reunification Policy for certain cases, though they may still apply under the International Protection Act framework.
