Iceland Removes Work Permit Requirement for International Students

Key Point

  • Iceland now allows holders of valid student residence permits to work without obtaining a separate work permit, simplifying employment access for international students.

Changes to Work Permit Requirement for International Students

The government of Iceland amended its immigration and employment laws to allow holders of valid student residence permits to work in Iceland without obtaining a separate work permit.

Key Changes for Student Residence Permit Holders

Students with a valid Icelandic student residence permit can now:

  • Work in Iceland without applying for a separate work permit.
  • Work as employees for up to 60% of full-time employment during academic periods.
  • Work full-time during academic breaks, including summer and Christmas holidays.

Important Conditions

While the work permit requirement has been removed, certain restrictions remain:

  • Self-employment is not permitted for student residence permit holders.
  • Students renewing their residence permits must disclose employment information to demonstrate compliance with permitted working hours.
  • Exceeding authorized work limits may result in the loss of work authorization.

Impact on Pending Renewal Applicants

The new rules also apply to students who:

  • Submitted a residence permit renewal application before their current permit expired; and
  • Are awaiting a decision on that renewal application.

These individuals may continue working under the same employment conditions.

First-Time Student Residence Permit Applicants

Individuals applying for their first student residence permit are not authorized to begin working until their residence permit has been issued.
