Denmark Introduces New Residence Permit Requirements for Ukrainian Men

• Denmark has implemented new immigration rules requiring certain Ukrainian men of military age to document fulfillment of military obligations before obtaining residence permits.  

Residence Permit Requirements for Ukrainian Men

Denmark has amended its Ukraine Special Act, introducing new eligibility requirements for Ukrainian men between the ages of 23 and 59 seeking residence permits under the temporary protection framework.  

New Documentation Requirements 

Affected applicants must demonstrate that they: 

• Have fulfilled military obligations in Ukraine; and 
• Are exempt from military service.  

Who Is Affected? 

The changes apply to: 

• Applications submitted on or after June 25, 2026 
• Certain residence permits granted after June 25, 2026 and before the law entered into force on Sept. 3, 2026 
• Ukrainian men are currently under 23 when they later seek permit extensions after turning 23. 

What Is Not Changing? 

The new requirements do not affect individuals who received residence permits under the Ukraine Special Act based on applications submitted before June 25, 2026.
