Belgium Updates Residence Application Procedures for EU Citizens

Key Point

  • Belgium updated its residence application process for EU citizens, requiring proof of citizenship and supporting documents to confirm residence status

Updated Residence Application Requirements for EU Citizens in Belgium

As of 1 September 2025, the Belgian Immigration Office implemented changes to the residence application process for European Union (EU) citizens. Key updates include:

  • Proof of Citizenship Required: EU citizens must present valid documentation confirming their citizenship during their first visit to the local municipality when submitting a registration application (Annex 19).
  • Supporting Documents for Residence Status: Applicants must also provide documents demonstrating their intended residence status in Belgium. This may include:
    • Proof of employment or self-employment
    • Evidence of job-seeking activity
    • Enrollment in an educational institution
    • Proof of sufficient financial means
    • Documentation showing family ties to an EU or Belgian citizen
  • Incomplete Applications Will Not Be Processed: Failure to submit all required documents at the time of application will result in the registration certificate not being considered.

Once applicants meet all conditions, authorities may grant the right of residence and issue an EU residence card.
