Understanding the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Visit Visa

Organizations planning business travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) should understand the available visa options, permitted activities and compliance requirements before employees travel.

The KSA visit visa is a broad category that allows foreign nationals to enter the Kingdom for short-term, non-employment purposes.

Because visa eligibility depends on factors including nationality, residence status, travel purpose and sponsorship requirements, selecting the correct visa category is an important step in ensuring compliance with KSA immigration regulations.

Anita Chalke, Senior Manager, KSA, outlines the primary KSA visitor visa categories and the factors organizations should consider when selecting the appropriate visa based on a traveler’s nationality, purpose of travel and sponsorship requirements.

What is a Saudi Arabia Visit Visa

A KSA Visit Visa allows foreign nationals to enter the KSA for short-term, non-employment purposes, including:

  • Tourist eVisa: For eligible travelers visiting for leisure, events, family or friends and Umrah, where permitted.
  • Business Visit Visa: For short-term meetings, consultations, negotiations and conferences; it does not permit local employment.
    • For business travel, employers should confirm whether an eVisa is appropriate for the intended activities or whether a sponsor-supported Business Visit Visa is required.
  • Personal or Family Visit Visa: For visiting relatives or personal contacts, typically based on an approved invitation.
  • GCC Resident Visa Pathway: For eligible GCC residents applying online, subject to current requirements.

The appropriate visa category depends on the traveler’s nationality, residence status, purpose of travel and whether a Saudi host or sponsor is required.

Visitor Visa Eligibility

A traveler’s nationality, residence status and prior visa history may determine the most suitable application route. Some travelers may be eligible to apply online or obtain a visa on arrival, while others may need to apply through a visa service center or the Saudi embassy.

As immigration requirements may change with limited notice, travelers and employers should check the current requirements with the Saudi embassy before applying.

Tourist eVisa and Visa on Arrival

  • Eligible nationals: Citizens of eligible countries may generally apply online for a tourist eVisa. The visa is commonly issued for one year with multiple entries and a maximum stay of 90 days per visit.
  • Eligible residents and visa holders: Certain permanent residents or holders of valid visas from the U.S., U.K., Schengen area, or GCC countries may qualify for online or arrival-based options, subject to current requirements.

Comparing the KSA Visit Visa Categories

Several visit visa options may be available depending on the traveler’s purpose of travel and eligibility. The table below summarizes key characteristics of the most used categories.

Visa Type  Validity  Stay Duration  Entry Type  Extensions
*Tourist eVisa  Generally, one year.  Up to 90 days per visit.  Multiple entry.  Generally unavailable; travelers may need to depart and reapply if eligible.
Business Visit Visa  Varies by nationality, sponsorship, and government approval.  Commonly up to 30 or 90 days per entry, depending on visa conditions.  Single- or multiple-entry, as approved.  Extensions may be possible in limited circumstances, subject to sponsor support and government approval.
Family Visit Visa  May be issued on a single-entry or multiple-entry basis, depending on approval.  Generally, 30 to 90 days per entry, subject to visa conditions.  Single or multiple entry.  Extension eligibility depends on the visa type and current Saudi immigration requirements.

KSA Visit Visa for Business Travel

Depending on the visa category and approved purpose, a visit visa may allow certain short-term business activities, including:

  • Business development: Attending meetings with prospective clients, partners and stakeholders.
  • Regional expansion: Exploring potential investment opportunities, partnerships or future business operations.

KSA Business Visit Visa: Permitted and Non-Permitted Activities

A Business Visit Visa is intended for short-term business activities such as meetings, negotiations, conferences and market discussions. An eligible eVisa may also be used for limited business visits where permitted under current regulations.

On an eVisa or Business Visit Visa in KSA, travelers are generally not authorized to perform hands-on technical work, execute project-based services, receive compensation from a Saudi employer unless specifically permitted under applicable immigration rules or engage in long-term employment.

Recent Changes to KSA Visit Visas and Practical Considerations

KSA immigration requirements continue to evolve, and authorities may impose penalties for overstays and visa misuse.

Visitors should monitor visa validity, authorized stay periods and departure requirements to help avoid penalties, future travel complications or travel disruptions.

During peak travel periods, including the Hajj season, authorities may introduce temporary restrictions, processing changes or additional controls for certain visa categories or nationalities.

Employers should verify current requirements before arranging travel.

Employer Considerations for Visit Visas to KSA

As KSA visit visa requirements continue to evolve, employers should confirm that travelers use the appropriate immigration pathway and that planned activities fall within the scope of the selected visa. Taking these steps early can help reduce application delays, travel disruptions and compliance risks.

Organizations should also account for factors such as nationality-specific requirements, sponsorship obligations, documentation standards and changing government procedures when coordinating travel to the Kingdom. Where multiple stakeholders are involved, maintaining visibility into application progress and ensuring travelers are prepared for the process can help support a smoother travel experience.
