What is an Education Evaluation and why might it be needed?

When an applicant’s highest degree was obtained from a school or university outside of the U.S., the U.S. government typically requires an evaluation completed by a professional evaluation agency to demonstrate that the foreign degree is the equivalent of a U.S. degree. 

An evaluation is generally needed for a filing which includes specific degree requirements. During the initial information gathering stage, please provide an evaluation if one has been previously completed on your behalf. If you do not have an Education Evaluation, please leave the document placeholder empty and the legal team or Envoy Customer Experience will let you know if one should be coordinated.   
 

What if I already have an Education Evaluation? Can the legal team use this for the case in my account? 

When completing the case questionnaire, you should notice a placeholder for an Education Evaluation within the Education section. Please upload any prior evaluations completed to this placeholder. If you do not see a specific placeholder for an Education Evaluation on a case where you would like to upload one, please reach out to Envoy Customer Experience for assistance.  

The legal team will review and determine if the evaluation can be used for the case. If the legal team determines that a new evaluation is required, you will be notified to begin the process of obtaining a new one.  
 

What if my degree cannot be equated to a U.S. degree?

Many degrees outside the U.S. can be equated to a four-year US degree based solely on the degree and transcripts that are provided. When a degree cannot be equated on education alone, the legal team may request an evaluation that combines education and experience to show that an applicant meets the education requirements for a filing.   

If the combined evaluation is needed, then Envoy will work with one of our trusted vendors and the applicant to obtain sufficient experience letters so that an appropriate evaluation can accompany the case. The legal team and Envoy Customer Experience will reach out to you for any additional required documentation.  
 

How long does it take to get an Education Evaluation? 

The process will usually take around 4-5 business days after all the documents are provided to the vendor and the order is placed. The timeline varies based on how quickly the necessary documents can be obtained (such as translations or experience letters), as well as securing the necessary approvals for this add-on service. Once the evaluation is completed, it will be uploaded to the case in your Envoy account.  

Am I required to provide translation for my legal documents? 

Government agencies often require a translation of legal documents. For U.S. cases, anything sent to USCIS should be in English or have an accompanied certified English translation; if an applicant applies outside of the US at a consulate, this may not be necessary. Other countries have similar requirements. The legal team will always determine if a translation is required for a case.  

The most common documents which may require translations are Diplomas, Transcripts/Marksheets, Marriage certificates, or Birth certificates. If a translation for any document is required, the legal team will create a placeholder within the case to specify the translations that they require.

Can I complete a translation myself? 

The legal team highly recommends that a professional translation is obtained for documents as certifying officers often prefer professionally certified versions. That said, if you are fluent in both languages and would like to complete a translation yourself, this is an option. If you translate a document yourself, the legal team will review it, and they may determine that a professional translation is necessary for case filing.  

For any translation completed by an individual unaffiliated with a professional translation service, a certified affidavit must be included with the original document and the translated version. The translator can use the affidavit below to certify that they are competent to perform the translation and that the translation is accurate. This affidavit must be notarized.

I am fluent in the written and spoken languages of [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] and English.
I am competent to translate [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] documents to English.
The attached translation of a [FOREIGN LANGUAGE] document to English is accurate.

Once the translations are completed, please upload the document directly to the case for review. You must upload the original document, the translated version, and the affidavit. The legal team will then review and let you know if any additional action is required.
