State Department Reportedly Pauses New F-1 Visa Interviews

Multiple news outlets report that Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a memo instructing U.S. consulates to pause new F-1 student visa appointments. This suspension will remain in effect until officials provide further guidance. The pause, which is part of the government’s efforts to implement more extreme vetting measures, is expected to result in an “expansion of required social media screening and vetting” for all student visa applications. While details have not been publicly confirmed, existing appointments are expected to continue as scheduled, and previously issued F-1 visas are not expected to be impacted. You can find a Department of State briefing that covers the government’s broader vetting efforts for students here.

This is a developing story, and additional information and details will be provided as official news becomes available.
