Poland Introduces Draft Law to Phase Out Special Protections for Ukrainian Citizens
Key Point
- Poland introduced a draft law that would formally end the temporary protections and benefits granted to Ukrainian citizens under the Special Act adopted in response to the 2022 conflict.
Phase‑Out of Special Act Provisions
Poland’s Ministry of the Interior submitted a draft law to terminate the extraordinary protections granted in March 2022 to Ukrainian citizens fleeing the conflict. The proposal would phase out simplified entry, immediate work authorization, broad access to social benefits and healthcare and other temporary measures currently available under the Special Act.
Under the draft, Ukrainian nationals would transition to the general rules governing foreign nationals in Poland, which involve more formalized residence procedures and narrower eligibility for public benefits. The government states that the change reflects a planned return to standard immigration processes after several years of emergency measures.
