Malaysia Activates Automated Photo Validation for VDR eVisa Applications
Key Point
- Malaysia now requires automated photo validation for Visa with Reference (VDR) eVisa applications, introducing stricter photo compliance checks for foreign nationals applying for long-term passes.
Photo Validation Requirements for VDR eVisa Applications
Malaysia has introduced a new automated photo validation feature for Visa with Reference (VDR) eVisa applications submitted through the MyVISA portal. Effective July 1, 2026, the system automatically screens all photos uploaded with eligible VDR eVisa applications to verify compliance with Malaysia’s visa photo requirements.
The change was announced through Malaysia Visa and the MIDA Expatriate Services (MES) platform and applies to eVisa applications associated with approved long-term immigration passes.
What Has Changed?
Beginning July 1, 2026:
- Automated photo validation is activated for all VDR (Visa with Reference) eVisa applications submitted through the MyVISA portal.
- Uploaded photographs will undergo an automatic compliance review against Malaysia’s official visa photo requirements.
Applications with photographs that do not meet the specified standards will be flagged and referred to the relevant VDR issuing authority.
Key Photo Requirements
Applicants must ensure that submitted photos meet the following criteria:
- Background color: White or blue only
- Background appearance: Plain and uniform, without patterns, textures, gradients or objects
- No shadows or reflections on the background
Failure to meet these standards may result in additional review or delays in visa processing.
Impacted Individuals
The update applies to foreign nationals applying for a VDR eVisa after approval of a long-term Malaysian immigration pass. The VDR eVisa is generally obtained outside Malaysia before traveling to the country for final pass endorsement.
Affected pass categories include:
- Employment Pass (EP)
- Professional Visit Pass (PVP)
- Residence Pass-Talent (RP-T)
- Dependant Pass (DP)
- Long-Term Social Visit Pass (LTSVP)
- Temporary Employment Visit Pass (TEVP)
- Student Pass
Applicants must submit their VDR eVisa application while residing in their country of residence, as Malaysia does not allow applicants to file VDR eVisa applications from within the country.
Additional Best Practices for Visa Photos
Although not expressly included in the announcement, immigration authorities commonly expect photos to adhere to additional standards, including:
- Full-face, front-facing image
- Eyes open and mouth closed
- Shoulders visible
- No facial shadows
- No spectacles
- No hats or head coverings that obscure the hairline or hair, except when worn for religious purposes
Employers and applicants should carefully review photo re
quirements before submitting applications to avoid potential processing delays.
What Happens if a Photo Fails Validation?
If a photograph fails the automated validation process, the case must be referred to the appropriate VDR-issuing authority. Depending on the application type, this may include:
- Expatriate Services Division (ESD)
- Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC)
- MIDA Expatriate Services (MES)
- XPats Nova
Officials may require additional instructions or corrective action before the eVisa can proceed.
