DHS Ends TPS Designation for South Sudan

Key Point

  • On November 4, 2025, the DHS announced that Temporary Protected Status TPS for South Sudan will officially terminate on January 5, 2026

Temporary Protected Status for South Sudan

On November 4, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published Federal Register notice confirming the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan. The designation will officially end on January 5, 2026.

TPS Termination Based on Interagency Review of Country Conditions

This decision follows a statutory review of country conditions, conducted in consultation with interagency partners, including the Department of State. DHS determined that South Sudan no longer meets the criteria required for TPS designation.

Next Steps for South Sudanese Nationals Ahead of TPS End

South Sudanese nationals currently holding TPS will retain their status through the termination date, provided they continue to meet eligibility requirements. Individuals planning to depart the U.S. are encouraged to use the CBP Home Mobile App, which offers a secure self-departure process that includes:

  • A complimentary flight
  • A $1,000 exit bonus
  • Potential future opportunities for legal immigration
