Denmark Updates Afghan Evacuee Law Repealed
Key Point
- Denmark will repeal the special law for evacuated persons from Afghanistan effective 1 July 2026, ending temporary protections granted after the 2021 Kabul evacuation
Afghan Evacuee Law Ends
Denmark announced in September 2025 that the Special Law for Evacuated Persons from Afghanistan, enacted in response to the Taliban takeover in 2021, will be repealed on 1 July 2026. This law provided temporary residence permits and legal protections to Afghan nationals evacuated by Danish authorities.
After the repeal, affected individuals will be subject to standard immigration rules under the Aliens Act, including requirements for residence renewal, asylum or other legal status. The Danish Immigration Service will contact those impacted to guide them through next steps.
