Canada Express Entry Prioritizes High-Wage Skilled Talent

  • Canada will update its Express Entry system on November 3, 2026, to prioritize candidates with eligible Canadian work experience and high-wage job offers while simplifying employer requirements.

Express Entry Prioritizes High-Wage Skilled Talent

The government of Canada has announced significant changes to the Express Entry system aimed at better aligning economic immigration selection with labor market needs.

Beginning Nov. 3, 2026, additional points will be awarded to candidates with eligible Canadian work experience or qualifying job offers in designated high-wage occupations.

The changes are intended to help attract and retain skilled talent in sectors facing workforce shortages while supporting Canada’s long-term economic growth objectives.

Additional Points for High-Wage Occupations

Under the revised Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), candidates may receive additional points for:

  • Eligible Canadian work experience.
  • Canadian work experience in a designated high-wage occupation.
  • A qualifying job offer in a designated high-wage occupation.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), eligible high-wage occupations include roles in sectors such as:

  • Healthcare
  • Skilled trades
  • Engineering
  • Technology
  • Education

LMIA Requirement Removed for Qualifying Job Offers

Canada is also streamlining the Express Entry process by eliminating the requirement for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) for qualifying job offers seeking to receive the new Express Entry points.

The LMIA will also no longer be required to satisfy job offer requirements under:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program

IRCC will continue to assess job offers for authenticity and compliance with program requirements and will maintain safeguards against fraud.

Impact on Current Express Entry Candidates

Candidates already in the Express Entry pool will have their CRS scores automatically recalculated under the new scoring system. However, individuals seeking points for a qualifying job offer must update their Express Entry profiles with the required information before November 3, 2026.

IRCC has indicated that Express Entry invitation rounds will be temporarily paused during the score recalculation process.

Looking Ahead

These changes build on Canada’s recent efforts to make Express Entry more targeted toward occupations and sectors experiencing labor shortages.
