Sweden Embassy Changes 2026

Embassy Closures
Sweden confirmed that the following embassies will shut down in 2026:
- La Paz, Bolivia – Focused on political dialogue, trade, and development cooperation.
- Monrovia, Liberia – Primarily focused on development assistance.
- Harare, Zimbabwe – Primarily focused on development assistance.
Diplomatic relations with these countries will continue through concurrent accreditation from other regional embassies.
Embassy Opening
Sweden will open a new embassy in Lima, Peru in 2026. The government emphasized that this expansion strengthens Sweden’s presence in Latin America and supports political, economic and cultural cooperation with Peru.
Development Assistance Shift
Sweden stated that the reform agenda is based on overall national interests, requirements, and budget priorities. While embassies in Bolivia, Liberia and Zimbabwe will close, Sweden will maintain diplomatic relations with these countries through regional representation.
The government emphasized that the changes strengthen Sweden’s ability to support Ukraine while continuing to uphold foreign policy partnerships globally.
