India Implements New Immigration Law
Key Point
- India introduced a new immigration framework effective 1 September 2025
New Immigration Framework 2025
On 1 September 2025, India enacted the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 and the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, replacing legacy legislation and establishing a unified, digital system for managing the entry, stay and exit of foreign nationals. The new framework consolidates previous laws and introduces centralized digital visa processing, mandatory registration protocols and enhanced compliance requirements for sponsoring organizations.
Corporate sponsors must now report foreign nationals onboarding, role changes and departures through a government portal. The law also strengthens oversight of third-party staffing arrangements and imposes stricter penalties for non-compliance.
