Canada Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Intake Paused for 2026
Key Point
-
Canada issued new instructions confirming that authorities will not accept any new Parent and Grandparent sponsorship applications beginning January 1, 2026
Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
Canada has published new instructions outlining how Parent and Grandparent applications will be managed in 2026. Starting January 1, 2026, Canada will no longer accept new PGP sponsorship or permanent residence applications. The pause will remain in place until the government issues further instructions.
IRCC will continue processing only PGP applications submitted in 2025, up to a maximum of 10,000 complete applications. These must come from individuals who received an invitation to apply in 2025.
IRCC issued invitations from the 2020 Interest to Sponsor pool. Sponsors must then ensure that their application information matches their 2020 submission or provide an explanation for any differences.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit all applications online unless they cannot apply electronically due to a disability or another approved reason. They must include all required forms and documents, file the application within the 60‑day deadline listed in the invitation letter, and respond to any IRCC request for missing documents within 30 days. IRCC will not accept applications that do not meet these requirements for processing.
The instructions also confirm that authorities will not consider Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) requests if they do not accept the associated application for processing. These measures take effect on January 1, 2026.
