United Kingdom Imposes Visa Pause on Countries Following Surge in Asylum Claims

Visa Suspensions for Select Countries
The United Kingdom (U.K.) has introduced a “visa brake,” suspending key visa routes for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. The Home Office announced the measure after a sharp rise in asylum claims from individuals who initially entered the UK through legal visa channels. As a result of the visa brake, the following measures have taken effect:
- Sponsored study visas for nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan are now suspended.
- Skilled worker visas for Afghan nationals have also been halted.
The U.K. Home Office described this as the first-ever use of an “emergency brake” on visas.
Implementation Timeline
- The changes will be introduced through an amendment to the U.K. Immigration Rules on 5 March 2026.
- The new restrictions will take effect on 26 March 2026.
