Portugal Extends Validity of Expired Residence Permits

Residence Permits Extended Until October
Effective 1 July 2025, Portugal extended the validity of residence permits that expired between 22 February 2020 and 30 June 2025. Under Decree-Law No. 85-B/2025, these permits will remain valid in Portugal through 15 October 2025.
- Expired permits within the specified timeframe are recognized for legal stay, employment, public services, and official purposes until 15 October 2025
- After this date, only residence cards accompanied by a proof of renewal payment issued by AIMA will be accepted; the receipt will be valid for 180 days
- AIMA will announce updated renewal procedures in the coming months
- The extension is valid only within Portugal; international travel with an expired card is not recommended
