Norway to Resume Processing Syrian Asylum Applications in 2026
Key Point
- Norway to Resume Processing Syrian Asylum Applications in 2026
Asylum Applications for Syria
Norway ended the suspension on processing asylum applications from Syrian nationals and stateless persons from Syria. The government introduced the suspension on 24 June 2025 for up to six months due to the highly uncertain situation in Syria following the fall of the regime.
With the Ministry’s decision not to extend the suspension, UDI will begin processing Syrian asylum applications again in 2026. UDI currently has just under 5,000 unprocessed asylum applications, approximately half of which are from Syrian nationals.
The government noted that, like most European countries, Norway will now resume normal asylum-case processing for Syrians, marking a significant shift after months of paused decision-making.
