New Zealand Launches New Student Visa Application System
Key Point
- New Zealand has transitioned international student visa applications to a redesigned online system aimed at improving efficiency and transparency
Student Visa System Upgrade
New Zealand introduced a new student visa application form on 18 August 2025, as part of its enhanced Immigration Online platform. The updated system features a form that tailors questions to each applicant’s situation, offers built-in guidance, and provides real-time status updates via a personalized dashboard. While the form may take slightly longer to complete due to additional evidence prompts, Immigration New Zealand expects faster decision times by collecting more information upfront.
Starting 18 September 2025, applicants must use the online system for the following visa types:
- English Language Student Visa
- Exchange Student Visa
- Fee Paying Student Visa
- Pathway Student Visa
- NZ Government Scholarship Student Visa
- Foreign Government Supported Student Visa
Paper-based applications for these categories will no longer be accepted. This rollout marks the first milestone in the Our Future Services program, a seven-year initiative to migrate all visa processing to the enhanced digital platform.
