New Zealand Announces Changes to the Specific Purpose Work Visa for Sports Professionals

  • Effective 26 May 2025, New Zealand is implementing changes to the Specific Purpose Work Visa for sports professionals 

New Zealand Visa Duration Changes for Sports Professionals 

Effective 26 May 2025, New Zealand is extending visa durations for sports professionals based on their level of competition. 

Visa Duration Changes 

  • Up to 12 months for sports players and coaches below the national or regional level 
  • Up to 36 months for those at a national or regional level 
  • Extensions available for contract renewals, allowing a total stay of up to 36 months 

Eligibility and Requirements 

Applicants must: 

  • Hold a paid role in a New Zealand sports club 
  • Provide required evidence and meet visa criteria 
  • Meet health and character requirements
