Latvia Reinstates Schengen Visa Requirement for Georgian Officials
Key Points
- Latvia has decided to reinstate the Schengen visa requirement for holders of Georgian diplomatic and service passports, effective immediately
Visa Policy Change Following EU Decision
On 17 June 2025, Latvia suspended the bilateral agreement with Georgia that previously allowed diplomatic and service passport holders to enter the country without a visa. This decision follows the European Union’s Council Decision (EU) 2025/170, which partially suspended visa facilitation for Georgian officials due to concerns over democratic backsliding, including restrictions on civil society and political opposition.
The government clarified that this new requirement applies only to diplomatic and service passport holders, while Georgian citizens with standard passports may still enter Latvia visa-free.
