Greenland Adjusts Residence Permit Rules to Boost Healthcare Recruitment

Key Point

  • Greenland will no longer reset the seven-year stay calculation for permanent residence when foreign workers shift into healthcare roles

Greenland’s Permanent Residence Policy

Greenland, under the Danish Immigration Service, has revised its policy to support healthcare staffing needs. Effective 22 August 2025, foreign residents with health education who transition from other sectors into healthcare will no longer face a reset in their seven-year legal stay calculation required for permanent residence. Previously, changing employment sectors interrupted the continuity of stay, forcing applicants to restart the count.

This change applies only to those entering healthcare roles covered by collective agreements and aligns with the fast-track agreement between Denmark’s Ministry of Immigration and Integration and Greenland’s Self-Government, Naalakkersuisut. The update aims to attract and retain qualified healthcare professionals amid a critical labor shortage.
