Germany to Abolish Remonstration Procedure for Visa Rejections

Key Point

  • From 1 July 2025, Germany will eliminate the remonstration procedure for visa rejections, streamlining processing and reducing waiting times

Visa Appeal Changes

Germany will discontinue the remonstration procedure, a voluntary legal remedy for visa rejections, following a successful pilot project. The trial showed that removing this step freed staff capacity, allowing for faster processing of both Schengen and national visa applications.

Applicants will still have legal avenues for judicial review and can reapply for a visa after rejection. With the global rollout of online national visa applications since January 2025, streamlined digital processing aims to further enhance efficiency and reduce delays caused by incomplete applications.
