Germany Launches European Entry/Exit System in October 2025

Key Point

  • Germany will begin rolling out the EU-wide Entry/Exit System (EES) at airports starting 12 October 2025

Entry/Exit System Implementation

Germany will officially implement the European Entry/Exit System (EES) beginning 12 October 2025, starting with Düsseldorf Airport. The system will digitally record the entry and exit of third-country nationals (non-EU citizens) traveling to the Schengen Area for short stays, replacing the current manual passport stamping process.

The EES will collect biometric data (fingerprints and facial images) along with personal and travel document details. It aims to enhance border security, reduce identity fraud, and improve overstay tracking. The rollout will expand to Frankfurt and Munich airports next, followed by all other external air and sea borders by 9 April 2026.

The new system does not affect EU citizens.
