Finland to Shorten Validity of International Protection Permits

Updates to the International Protection Permit  

Effective 2 January 2025, Finland shortened the validity periods of international protection permits, making protection temporary. Asylum and extended refugee permits will be granted three years instead of four. Subsidiary protection permits will be issued for one year initially and extended for two years. 

Temporary protection will allow the Finnish Immigration Service to assess the need for continued protection more frequently, granting it only as long as necessary. New grounds for refusing and terminating protection include serious crimes or societal threats. 

If protection status is lost but removal is not possible, a one-year temporary residence permit will be granted.
