European Union: Single Permit Directive

Key Points

  • The European Council and the European Parliament approved the introduction of a Single Permit Directive for third-country nationals seeking work and residence permits in the EU

Overview

On 21 December 2023, the European Union (EU) approved the introduction of a Single Permit Directive and the rules of immigration law for the EU. The directive sets out the application process for EU countries to issue a single permit and establishes common rights for workers from third countries. Under the rule, member states decide which and how many third-country workers they want to admit to their labor market.

Third-country nationals can submit an application from the territory of a third country or from within the EU if the applicant holds a valid residence permit. When a member state decides to issue a single permit, the decision will serve as a residence and a work permit. Applicants will ideally receive a decision on the issuance of the permit within three months of the receipt of the complete application. For additional information on these changes, check here.
